Pay attention to the details and treat your team fairly, a quality job and customer satisfaction will be the result. These are the operating principles which allowed John’s grandfather and father, Harvey Sr. and Harvey Jr., to build McFarland Construction into such a successful company.

According to John McFarland and Walter Abicht, owners of the current McFarland Construction, focusing on these same principles has been the key to their success in the home building industry.

They have been building homes in this area since 2000. John runs the field operations in the Picton area. Walter, who is president, runs the Kingston field operations and administers the company.

Walter’s Master in Business Administration degree from Queen’s University has been invaluable in the administration side and has helped them structure the company so as to minimize costs in order to give their customers the best value for their dollar.

“We are neither the cheapest nor the most expensive builder in Kingston. Most of our customers have owned a number of homes and now want more quality and features rather than the maximum square feet per dollar.”

Keeping the company small is also a key success factor. “When you are small it is a lot easier to control quality.” Customers also have direct access to Walter who will answer any of their questions and guide them through the whole process.

“We also don’t change trades for a few dollars savings and we allow more time in our schedule. This way the trades know our expectations and have the time to do it right. They also know that we are on site and available to solve any problems they may encounter.”

The end result is a happy customer.
